Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the launch of the Human Rights and Poverty
Children's writing competition, one of many
activities being organised for the upcoming Human Rights Day 2006, 10
December. The competition is a joint initiative of DPI and the Office of the
High Commissioner for Human Rights, with assistance from the Department of
Economic and Social Affairs' Division for Social Policy and Development.

Human Rights Day 2006 will focus on fighting poverty as a matter of
obligation, not of charity. For the one in six people in the world who
currently live in poverty, this situation is frequently a consequence as
well as a cause of human rights abuses.
Discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender or other reasons can
prevent people from gaining adequate access to services and to participate
in the political process in their country. Without access to such things as
employment, basic healthcare, education and essentials like food, clothing
and water, many poor people lack the means to change their
lives for the better and are condemned to live a life of poverty. The Human
Rights and Poverty children's writing competition gives students between the
ages of 8 to 18 the chance to share their thoughts on how to tackle poverty
and protect human rights. Find out more at
