Diplomatic Theory and Practice – online course

International Debate Education Association in cooperation with
DiploFoundation will offer a short online course Diplomatic Theory and
Practice (http://www.diplomacy.edu/Edu/catalogue.asp#Theory), taught by
Prof. Geoff Berridge, Mr Haraldur Egillson and Mr Christiaan Sys, starting
on 29th January and finishing on the 19th March 2007.

The main objective of this course is to provide a clear account of the shape
and functions of the world diplomatic system as it stands at the beginning
of the 21st century - what it is, what it does, and why it is important. The
course also emphasises the importance of historical context to understanding
the present, and draws attention to the continuing importance of diplomatic
practices with old roots. A student who has successfully completed this
course should have a strong conceptual, historical, and political grasp of
the art of diplomacy and the richness of the opportunities that it presently
provides.

Diplo's online courses are designed to allow full time professionals and
students interested in international relations to continue their education
by learning about new topics in the field of diplomacy, or expanding and
refreshing their knowledge of more traditional topics.

The Diplomatic Theory and Practice Course will require 9 weeks of part-time
study, typically 6-8 hours per week. Successful participants are awarded a
certificate from DiploFoundation.

The course consists of eight lectures, each of which takes a week to
complete. Each lecture includes a lecture text, online activities such as
self-assessment quizzes, discussion forums, and further resources, all
provided through an online classroom. Following a weekly cycle, participants
will read the lecture text, adding and responding to questions, comments and
references in the form of hypertext annotations and links. At the end of the
weekly cycle, participants and lecturers will meet online in a chat room to
discuss the lecture text and other resources. Participants will be expected
to complete one or two assignments based on course materials.

The course is designed for university students.

The course fee is 345 Euro or 800 IDEA Guilders. For information on how to
win IDEA guilders please visit www.idebate.org/thepeoplespeak/

The application deadline for the course is 1st December. For more
information please contact Marcin Zaleski at mzaleski at idebate.org

IDEA will be adding more on-line curses in 2007- focusing on argumentation
and debate. Specific information on the course will be provided at the end
of 2006.
