The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) is pleased to announce an open call for the position of tournament director at the 2007 IDEA Youth Forum.
General information
The IDEA Youth Forum will take place in the Czech Republic between July 23rd and August 5th 2007.
The participants in the Forum will be high-school students (aged 15-19) and their coaches from a wide variety of countries in Europe, Asia, or even Latin America and Africa.
The official language of instruction at the Forum will be English. The debate format for the Forum will be Karl Popper Debate (for more details on this format please visit www.idebate.org).
The Forum will feature two debate tournaments:
- The IDEA Karl Popper Debate Championships on resolutions regarding water as common property. The exact resolutions will be announced at a later date.
- The IDEA Karl Popper Mixed Teams Tournament in the general topic area of freedom of expression. The exact resolutions to be debated will be announced at a later date.
Tournament Directors profile The tournament director is the main coordinator of the debate tournaments that take place during the Forum and all activities connected to them. Candidates must have previous tabulation experience and excellent computer skills, as well as a good command of the English language. Knowledge of the IDEA Easy Tournament software constitutes an advantage.
The tournament directors responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- become familiar prior to the Forum with the software to be used (IDEA Easy Tournament) by running simulation tournaments and working to fix possible errors with the softwares creator;
- run the tournaments during the Forum and make all necessary announcements and decisions regarding the tournaments as outlined in the IDEA Standards;
- assist the Chief Adjudicator with creating the rating of judges for the tournaments;
- prepare intermediate reports and assist the Chief Adjudicator with information pertinent to judges meetings;
- prepare the list of mixed teams and consult with the Curriculum Director for their assignment into lab groups;
- prepare the necessary lists of results and awards for participants and organizers.
IDEA will cover the tournament directors costs associated with accommodation, food, excursions and cultural events. IDEA will also compensate the tournament director with $10 per diem during the Forum, as well as cover reasonable travel costs to the site of the Forum.
All interested applicants are requested to submit their application form via IDEAs Online Application System (http://oas.idebate.org/idea/ ). Please login and select new application from the left side navigation bar. Then follow the directions of the application form. The deadline for applications is October 1st 2006.
The IDEA-NL Board will select the tournament director based on his/her experience and ability to run the debate tournaments according to IDEA Youth Forum requirements. Applicants will be notified of their status mid-late October 2006.
