Hello Everyone:
As the first Chief Adjudicator at an IDEA international tournament, I
would like to first say hello to all of you, second, give you an idea
of what my job at the camp will be and third, ask for your help and
suggestions with putting together the material that I will use to
train judges.
The position of the Chief Adjudicator was proposed with several goals in mind:
1) that we needed to establish some sort of consistency in judging
philosophies and practices across different participant countries in
order to insure a certain level of quality.
2) that we needed to make clear what the judging rules and
expectations at the camp would be.
3) that judges, just like debaters, needed to be trained in order to
address a series of challenges and difficult questions
4) that someone needed to address, investigate and solve any issues or
complaints connected with judging during the tournaments.
I will be in charge of making sure that all four goals listed above
are achieved at this coming camp. In order to do so, I will need your
help. There are several things that I am working on right now, and
your individual experience and suggestions would be priceless in putting this
together;
1) I am now putting together a list of topics that need to be
addressed during the judges' lab. Judges will have 8 separate labs to
both debrief what happens during the tournaments as well as discuss
and address general concerns and questions about judging. Any suggestions, send them my way.
2) I am also putting together, along with several other people, a new judging handbook. The topics to be included in the handbook are listed under the discussion board connected to the Youth Forum. If there is anything else that would like to add or if you'd like to sign up for writing a section of the handbook, do let me know.
3) I also want to use several exercises during the judges' labs which
will involve role play and evaluation of actual rounds. For this, I
could definitely use any written transcripts of debate rounds or parts
of debate rounds that you might have (this could even include a really
nice flow-sheet that can be scanned), as well as descriptions, or
questions regarding difficult rounds, decisions or other instances
that you think are important to address. Using real instances or
problems will be particularly useful to address. Please send your suggestions to me via email or post them on the discussion boards.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you! Your input will definitely
be appreciated.
All the best,
Anca Pusca
