The Newcomer Track
“for those without prior debate experience”

  Welcome!

to an exciting adventure in learning about debate, critical
thinking, and important issues facing our societies and the world. Expand
your personal skills in analysis, problem solving, advocacy, and
responsible citizenship. New experiences and perspectives await you while
learning with others in a supportive, encouraging environment.

Content: the value of debate, nature of critical thinking, argument
construction, effective use of evidence, listening and note-taking,
useful methods of questioning, answering arguments, different debate
formats, and debate etiquette.

Methods: interactive dialogue, mini lectures, observing debates,
working in teams, practice debates, and interpersonal feedback from
trainers.

  Talk to the Trainers:
Margarita Dusciac, in Moldova, mdusciac at yahoo.com
Ronna Liggett, in U.S.A., brliggett at aol.com

Philosophy of the Trainers: We hope to introduce students to the
intellectually exciting and challenging world of debate. You will be
provided with knowledge about debate in sessions carefully planned to
develop both your competency and confidence in personal expression
particularly in a debate setting.

  Additional information:
The track will run parallel to the IDEA Karl Popper debate
Chimapioships. Therefore, students attending the novice track will not compete in
the first tournament, but will join in mixed teams during the second
part of the Forum.
To be eligible to register for the novice track debaters should not
have been debating for more than one year in any debate format and for no
more than six months in Karl Popper debate. Debaters must also meet all
eligibility requirements for the IDEA Karl Popper Debate Championships.
Those interested in participating will need to register for this
specific track once registration begins.
