greetings from training in Lira, Uganda

Dear all

sending greetings from Lira, Uganda! I am doing already a second training for the children in Northern Uganda. It is a  project led by a Dutch NGO called War Child Holland who work with children in war affected areas. IDEA was invited as an expert organization to facilitate and instruct on how to lead discussions with the local government official and other important stakeholders within the region using the tool of model Children's parliament. This time I was joined for the training by Isabelle from CRY-Uganda (Conflict Resolution Youth) our partner organization here in Uganda, with whom IDEA closely cooperated in the project that finished this winter - the Dialogue Through Debate.

This second training lasts for 4 days and it's already a continuation of the course. In the 2 days I was trying to develop the children's public speaking and argumentation skills even further. Today we will narrow down the discussion about the rights of a child to a few areas that are most important for the children in their communities. Starting from tomorrow we will also talk much more about the way parliamentarians get issues discussed - we will simulate a Committee and a Plenary session using very simple rules to guide the discussion.

This training, similarly like the last one will result in a meeting with real political representatives of local authorities. This time it will be more thorough and argumentative discussion than last time, when they simulated a session in Plenary. Next week the pupils will meet with the stakeholders at a round-table discussion, as  if they were in a Parliamentary Committee. They hope to achieve the same buzz as last time, when the whole District city was talking about the Children giving the real district officials a hard time!
