GLOBAL CALL FOR TRAINERS
IDEA Youth Forum, Czech Republic 2007
The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) is pleased to announce a global call for trainers for the 13th annual IDEA Youth Forum.
General information The IDEA Youth Forum will take place in the Czech Republic between July 23rd and August 5th 2007.
The participants in the Forum will be high-school students (aged 15-19) and their coaches from a wide variety of countries in Europe, Asia, or even Latin America and Africa.
The official language of instruction at the Forum will be English. The debate format for the Forum will be Karl Popper Debate (for more details on this format please visit www.idebate.org)
During the Forum participants will engage in sessions on argumentation theory and debate concepts as well as specific sessions that address the resolutions to be debated. The Forum will also feature two debate tournaments:
- The IDEA Karl Popper Debate Championships on resolutions regarding water as common property. The exact resolutions will be announced at a later date.
- The IDEA Karl Popper Mixed Teams Tournament in the general topic area of freedom of expression. The exact resolutions to be debated will be announced at a later date.
Trainers Profile The applicants for the position of trainers at the IDEA Youth Forum should have relevant experience in debate education, that is, be either former debaters, debate coaches, debate trainers or debate teachers. The applicants should have necessary skills and experience relevant to designing debate curriculum, prepare educational materials (session plans, debate exercises and handouts) and research materials for the given topics.
The applicants should speak fluent English, and be able to conduct content sessions in English for an international student and adult audience.
As the preparation for the Forum takes place via Internet and email facilities, it is important that trainers have adequate skills and access to using the Internet. Although the Forum takes place in the summer, trainers will have to be committed to the preparation process before that. Trainers should be able to work on the preparation for the Forum during the period of November - August.
Trainers Responsibilities The trainers of the Forum will be responsible for:
- preparing curriculum materials for the Forum under the supervision and by the deadlines set forth for them by the Curriculum Committee;
- engaging in regular and substantial communication with other trainers and potential participants in the preparation period before the Forum;
- researching and preparing materials for the topics to be discussed during the Forum;
- respecting all deadlines and submitting all materials for the Forum on time;
- participating in the training of trainers that will take place two days prior to the Forum;
- conducting sessions for students and their coaches during the Forum. Trainers should not be engaged in any other meetings or sessions that conflict with their training sessions.
- judging in the debate tournaments during the Forum.
Trainers Benefits
IDEA will cover the trainers costs associated with their stay at the Forum: accommodation, food, excursions and cultural events.
IDEA will compensate for the trainers time involved in the preparation of the training materials with $10 per diem during the Forum.
IDEA will cover reasonable travel costs to the site of the Forum for trainers. Decisions will be made on an individual basis.
Selection Procedure All prospective trainers are requested to submit their application form via IDEAs Online Application System (http://oas.idebate.org/idea/ ). Please login and select new application from the left side navigation bar. Then follow the directions of the application form. The deadline for applications is October 1st 2006.
The Forum Curriculum Committee will select approximately 30 trainers. The Committee will take into account candidates experience related to teaching debate and their ability to develop curriculum materials. Preference will be given to IDEA Accredited International Trainers and trainers affiliated with IDEA member associations or clubs. Attempts will also be made to ensure geographical diversity amongst trainers as well as a balanced ratio of new trainers and trainers who have previously trained at the IDEA Youth Forum.
All candidates will be notified of their status in mid-late October 2006 and expected to start their preparation in November 2006.
