Hello everyone,

If you have peaked at the Youth Forum schedule on www.ideayouthforum.org you may have noticed that during the mixed part of the Forum, for three consecutive morning, the first lab of the day is a "split lab". What are these labs, anyway?

As a novelty this year we are introducing one lab/day in which the focus will be on individual skill. Debaters have the opportunity to focus on developing their skills in certain areas of debate and work individually, rather than as a team like for the rest of the labs.

Students will be divided into two levels of debate experience and given the option to choose what labs to attend. We will couple your choices with the recommendations of judges from the first tournament. Then we will inform you what are your courses for those three days. The labs will feature a lot of practical exercises.

Here are the labs that trainers are now finalizing:

Delivery - what makes an effective delivery, persuasiveness, overcoming speaking anxiety, strategies for persuading judges, etc.

Cross-examination - good vs. poor questions, preparing questions in advance, maximizing your cross-ex time, etc.

Resolution interpretation - what to keep in mind when trying to interpret a resolution, particularities of different types of resolutions, tips and strategies, common mistakes, etc.

Evidence - conducting effective research, how to evaluate evidence, power of evidence (strong vs. weak pieces of evidence), role of evidence during a debate and in the structure of an argument, etc.

Refutation - general strategies for refutation that can be applied to almost any argument, steps in refuting an argument, specific strategies depending on cases/ types of arguments, etc.

Case building - basics about building a case depending on the resolution to be debated, structure of cases, strategies for "good" cases, what makes a good case, etc.

Argument structure - differentiation between arguments and simple statements, how to structure a powerful argument, what makes good arguments, rebuilding an argument.

Responding to cases - options for responding to the (aff) case depending on the resolution and type of case presented by the other team, burdens of each team strategies to employ, etc

Flowing - why flowing matters, reasons for flowing, flowing strategies, learning to flow effectively

English through debate - mastering English debate terms and enhancing your ability to debating in English through debate exercises

We look forward to teach you all these cool things.
The team of trainers
